MANSFIELD — Junior Max Van Fossen and senior Ashton Spurgeon took home the championships in their respective weight classes as the 2018 Ohio Cardinal Conference Championships, held at Mansfield Senior on Saturday.
After a first-round bye, Van Fossen (30-9) started his quest for the 160-pound title by pinning Lexington’s Hayden Hoskins in 1:42. That left just one match for the championship, which Van Fossen won in a shutout, 7-0, over Ashland’s Gage Adkins.
Spurgeon (37-2) won by forfeit in his first match at 195 pounds, then took down Lexington’s Seth Cole in just 40 seconds in his first contested match. That put Spurgeon in the finals, and he dominated Tristian Pitz of Ashland by a technical fall, 17-2, to claim his title.
Their efforts spurred the Yellow Jackets to third place in the team competition. Ashland won its third-straight championship with 235.5 points, and West Holmes bettered the Jackets by only 4.5 points, 137-132.5, to take second place.
Sophomore’s Jacob Burrell (106 lbs.) and Wyatt Gregory (138) earned third place. After a first-round forfeit, Burrell lost his first real match to Mansfield Madison’s Ted Haring, who eventually placed second, by pin in 1:30. In the consolation bracket, Burrell won another forfeit before taking down Adrion Hall of Mansfield Senior in a major decision, 10-1, for third.
Gregory had a first-round bye, then dropped his first match to weight-class champion Austin McNamara of Ashland in 2:18. Gregory pinned his first consolation opponent, C.J. Hock of Mansfield Senior, in 1:54, then defeated West Holmes’ Hunter Bowling in 4:08 in the third-place match.
Five other wrestlers reached the third-place match, senior Jaxon Gregory (170), junior Jacob Dehart (120), sophomores Triston Bowens (132) and Connor Dailey (160) and freshman Noah Coker (220), but were defeated to finish fourth.
West Holmes’ Thane Kaufman (37-6) was named the OCC Wrestler of the Year after winning the 120-pound class, and Ashland head coach Sean Seder was named Coach of the Year.
In the junior varsity meet at Marion Pleasant, A.J. Keen won Mount Vernon’s only championship at 145 pounds. Britten Long (138), Jace Peugh (152) and Bailey Cunningham (160) each took home third place; and Kelton Grogg (152) finished fourth. Ryan Coker (138) earned sixth place, and Carson Rhoades (152) claimed seventh place.
Mount Vernon will finish off the regular season against an OCC rival, Mansfield Madison, on Thursday at 6 p.m. at Pleasant Street Elementary School.
