MOUNT VERNON — The field of locksmithing is very intricate, technical, challenging and ever-changing, and Gary Fesler, owner of Mount Vernon business Lock & Key, enjoys every minute of it.

As a youngster, Fesler had always loved tinkering with gadgets and was able to disassemble objects and then reassemble them with ease.

“It’s not much; it’s just mechanical,” Fesler told the News, with a modest smile. “As long as you can use your fingers, which I’ve done all my life.

“I’ve worked in the garage (as a youth). When I was in the service or in the Navy, they picked me up as a jet mechanic because I knew how to use my fingers, and so it just followed through from there.”

The self-trained locksmith began Lock & Key back in 2000. As a locksmith, Fesler often travels throughout Mount Vernon and Knox County in his large white truck, helping community members who find themselves in lock-related predicaments.
