War hero York opens Chautauqua season

He was born in a two-room log cabin in Tennessee, obtained only nine months of schooling and was drafted into the army in World War I, where he received the Medal of Honor for capturing a German machine gun post and taking down six Germans with fixed bayonets who charged his position.

All quiet on the Western front

Mid-January of 1918 was a quiet time in World War I, at least on the Western Front where small probing actions seemed to be the order of the day. In Italy, three to five feet of snow all across the mountain front had forced a halt to the Austro-German offensive.
