MOUNT VERNON — Young Spellers from all over the county waged war with words ranging over several rounds of intense play Thursday, moderated by Coordinator Don Garvic. The 58th Annual Knox County Spelling Bee was held at the Mount Vernon Middle School Library.
Fredericktown fifth-grader Kristen Cobb and Danville seventh-grader Ava Stiltner were the last left standing out of 18 contestants who participated. The spellers encountered words such as “spinster,” “Methuselah” and “atoll.” With just Stiltner and Cobb left, after three rounds of lobbying words back and forth, Stiltner misspelled “parenthetical” and Cobb correctly spelled “clandestine” to win the champion trophy.
Stiltner said she was pleased to take the runner-up place. “I am feeling good. This was my second spelling bee and it’s exciting to come in second.”
Cobb, on the other hand, was already steadying herself for her next spelling bee.
“I’m excited, but I’m very nervous for the Regional Spelling Bee,” Cobb said. This was her first spelling bee.
