MOUNT VERNON — The Mount Vernon swim team hosted its final meet of the season on Saturday at the Kenyon Athletic Center, and the girls’ team went undefeated in dual events against Big Walnut, Bloom-Carroll, Coshocton and Hamilton Township.
The Yellow Jackets defeated Big Walnut by 100 points, 227-127; Bloom-Carroll, 222-102; Coshocton, 232-35; and Hamilton Township, 233-0.
The Mount Vernon boys went 3-1, beating Bloom-Carroll, 131-35; Coshocton 132-48; and Hamilton Township, 136-8. Big Walnut was the only team to defeat the Jackets, winning 232-114 in going 4-0 for the meet.
Mount Vernon’s girls won six individual events and three relays. Maggie Williams earned first in the 200-yard Individual Medley (2.28.42), and later topped the field in the 500-yard freestyle (5:52.38). Anna Paxton led a 1-2-3 finish in the 50-yard freestyle with a time of 27.15, and Skylar Hill won the 100-yard butterfly (1:04.34). Olivia Matulich took the victory in the 100 freestyle (1:07.40), and Camille Fitzsimmons had a winning time of 1:11.29 in the 100 backstroke.
In relays, Paxton, Williams, Hill and Kendra Spitzer won the 200 medley relay (2:04.79); and Paxton, Ellie Broeren, Staci Brenneman and Spitzer teamed for first in the 200 freestyle relay (1:57.25). Paxton, Williams, Hill and Claire Duffy were first in the 400 freestyle (4:01.86).
Matulich was also second in the 200 free (2:27.86), followed by Brenneman in third (2:30.57). Fitzsimmons placed in the 50 free (28.80), with Spitzer taking third (29.42). Duffy was runner-up in the 500 free (6:00.02), and Valerie Stichert had a second-place time of 1:24.88 in the 100 breaststroke and a third-place effort of 1:14.44 in the 100 butterfly.
The team of Fitzsimmons, Stichert, Duffy and Sandi Brenneman was second in the 200 medley relay (2:07.80); and Kala Estes, Stichert, Matulich and Sandi Brenneman finished third in the 200 free relay (2:10.90).
The boys won three events, as Seth Lawhon earned the top spot in the 100 backstroke (1:13.73) and Aiden Clarkson earned first in the 100 breaststroke (1:04.80). Lawhon, Clarkson, Marshall Smith and Curtis Erlandson also combined to win the 200 medley relay (1:56.72).
Smith posted a second-place finish in the 100 butterfly (1:07.76), trailed by Noah Humphrey in third place (1:27.16). Erlandson, Humphrey, Jacob Lebold and Sulekh Fernando-Peiris earned second in the 200 free relay (1:57.29); and Smith, Lawhon, Erlandson and Clarkson finished runner-up in the 400 free relay (3:48.05).
Lebold also contributed two third-place finishes, in the 200 free (2:20.88) and the 500 free (6:16.13). Fernando-Peiris placed third in the IM (2:47.92), and Erlandson was third in the 100 free (58.39).
In junior varsity races, Sandi Brenneman paced the 50 freestyle in 29.65, with teammate Broeren second (30.34) and Elizabeth Snyder third (40.43).
It was also Senior Day for the Jackets. Among seniors honored were Fitzsimmons, Stichert, Lawhon, Clarkson, Matulich, Staci Brenneman, Fernando-Peiris and Broeren.
Mount Vernon send its seniors and the rest of the team to the Ohio Cardinal Conference championships on Saturday at Wooster High School, starting at 9 a.m.
