MOUNT VERNON — Knox County Veteran’s Services Executive Director Kevin Henthorn got a bit of a shock when he opened this year’s contract for transportation services with Knox Area Transit.

The contract said that beginning in 2018, Knox Area Transit (KAT) will begin billing not just by the hour, but $2.01 per mile as well. Previously, KAT billed veteran’s services by the hour, with a rate for driving time and a rate for wait time.

With the mileage rate factored in, a single trip to the Cleveland VA would cost over $300.

“That’s a 120 mile round trip — that puts our expense at $250, plus the hourly rate,” Henthorn said. “I can understand that for in-county trips, but it just isn’t going to work for us.”
