MOUNT VERNON — Volunteers are the backbone of many community organizations within Knox County — contributing to events, programs and organizations from behind the scenes without much recognition.

International Volunteer Day, today, is the perfect opportunity to acknowledge all of the hard work, dedication and passion volunteers bring to bettering Knox County.

The United Way of Knox County receives help from over 400 volunteers every year. These volunteers help within the office itself, with fundraising and community events, and with landscaping or maintenance-type work, said Karen Schroeder, resource development coordinator.
