MOUNT VERNON — When Josh Egan was awarded his varsity football letter, he turned and greeted each of the assistant coaches with hugs.

The spectacle did something rarely seen: It made Mount Vernon head football coach Mike Kerr speechless.
“He’s our team hugger,” Kerr finally told the crowd at the high school cafeteria.

Egan and the rest of the Mount Vernon football players were honored Thursday evening at the team’s annual banquet. Letters were passed out to all the players, and special honors went to the team’s standouts from the 2017 season.

Egan, a senior, was the most decorated, having been awarded Ohio Cardinal Conference First Team as well as OCC Scholar Athlete and the Yellow Jackets’ coveted Block of Granite Award, which went to the best offensive blocker.
