The JROTC, along with the Lucy Knox Chapter of Daughters of the American Revolution and other volunteers, placed 429 wreaths on the graves of veterans.

As people gather today to honor the men and women who have answered the call to serve in our armed forces, thoughts are also turning to those individuals who made the ultimate sacrifice to defend our freedoms.

Joshua Morrison/News Leaf pick-up in the city of Mount Vernon began on Monday. Leaves will be picked up through Nov. 30. Residents are reminded to rake their leaves to the curb and not out into the street.

Fall is back; so is leaf pickup

With the arrival of more typical fall weather, trees are finally shedding their leaves and the city will resume regular leaf pick-ups Monday, Street Superintendent Tom Hinkle reported at the mayor’s weekly press briefing.

Bethany Flanagan/News Equipment failure at an AEP substation near Howard and South McKenzie streets caused loss of power to about 2,100 AEP Ohio customers at about 2 p.m. Friday. According to a spokesperson, the equipment malfunction resulted in a downed live wire. The substation had to be de-energized for the problem to be corrected. During the restoration process, another issue was discovered, leaving about 1,000 customers on the city’s east end without power. As of press time, all power had been restored to city AEP Ohio customers.
