MOUNT VERNON — Several Knox County communities/organizations have scheduled ceremonies in honor of Veteran’s Day, Saturday, Nov. 11. Those include:
Tuesday, Nov. 7
•Pleasant Street Elementary will have a luncheon for veterans at 1:15 p.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 7, and an assembly to honor veterans and celebrate the heroes at 2:15 p.m.
Thursday, Nov. 9
•Newton Elementary will have a Veteran’s Day music assembly at 1:30 p.m. by 4/5th grade students on Thursday, Nov. 9.
•Utica Elementary will have a program on Nov. 9 at 2:30 p.m. in the Utica Elementary gymnasium. All veterans are invited.
Friday, Nov. 10
•Fredericktown Local Schools will be honoring local veterans again this year. The high school/middle school assembly will be held at approximately 9:15 a.m. on Friday, Nov. 10. Veterans should arrive between 8:45 a.m. and 9 a.m. and gather in the elementary commons at 9:05 a.m., so they can walk down the “Hallway of Honor” prepared by the elementary students. The assembly will last about an hour, and light refreshments will be served immediately afterward. The keynote speaker this year will be Retired Lieutenant Colonel Keith Bohley. All veterans are invited to join the school. RSVP to Fredericktown High School at 740-694-2726. In the event of a two-hour delay, the assembly will be held in the afternoon at 1 p.m.
•East Knox veterans are cordially invited to the annual Veteran’s Day Breakfast and Assembly to be held in the high school on Friday, Nov. 10. Breakfast will be served in the cafeteria at 8:15 a.m. and the assembly starts at 9 a.m.
•Danville schools will have their typical programs on Friday, Nov. 10. The elementary one begins at 10 a.m. (gym) and the middle/high school program in the high school gym begins at 1 p.m.There will be a guest speaker and musical pieces.
Saturday, Nov. 11
•Fredericktown American Legion Post 500 will have its Veterans Day Remembrance Dinner on Nov. 11 at 6:30 p.m. at the Fredericktown Methodist Church. James “Jim” Lester, Vietnam veteran, will be the speaker. Jim was born April 1, 1948, in Virginia, moved to Fredericktown in 1961 and graduated from Fredericktown High School in 1966. Jim entered the U.S. Army in April 1969 and took basic training at Ft. Gordon, Ga. He served a full term in Vietnam plus a three-month extension with the 4th and 23rd Mechanized Unit attached to the 25th Infantry Division. He was a Specialist 4th Class on his discharge on Nov. 11, 1970. His awards include National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, Vietnam Campaign Medal, Combat Infantry Badge, Army Commendation Medal w/Oak Leaf Cluster, Good Conduct Medal, and a Bronze Star Medal.
Thursday, Nov. 16
•Wiggin Street Elementary will be hosting veterans at an assembly on Nov. 16 at 2:45 p.m. The children will hear a presentation from the VA and will have songs and poems prepared to honor the veterans. Family members who are vets have been invited to attend.
