Eric D. Stump

MOUNT VERNON — A Mount Vernon man has been charged criminally after making a claim that police were operating their cruisers recklessly, nearly running him over.

Eric D. Stump, 54, is charged in Mount Vernon Municipal Court with false report of peace officer misconduct, a first-degree misdemeanor.

The charge stems from Sept. 26. According to Mount Vernon City Law Director Rob Broeren, Stump, in a 911 call, claims that he was almost run over by police on Coshocton Avenue at 2:42 a.m.

The statute Stump is charged under states that false allegation of police misconduct occurs when a person files a complaint alleging misconduct in the performance of the officer’s duties, when they know the allegation is false. In this case, Broeren said, the 911 call is the complaint of misconduct.

Stump is currently incarcerated at the Knox County Jail on a $2,500 bond. The case is scheduled for arraignment Friday.
