MOUNT VERNON — It’s a jungle out there, or rather, on stage in the Memorial Theater when MTVarts youth program, ArtsIQ, presents Disney’s classic musical “The Lion King Jr.”
More than 100 young people are involved in all aspects of the production. There are youth actors and ensembles on stage as well as student backstage, lighting, sound, costume and makeup helpers learning stagecraft while paired with adult mentors. All cast members took part in a week-long intensive summer workshop to learn the fundamentals of theater, and worked through six weeks of rehearsals to bring the full-scale musical to life.
This coming-of-age story set in Africa tells about betrayal, friendship, duty and love. Among the colorful characters are, of course, lions, elephants, gazelles, laughing hyenas, a meercat, a warthog, birds and more.
