MOUNT VERNON — An all-inclusive playground is in the works for Memorial Park in Mount Vernon.

Knox County Board of MR/DD superintendent Steve Oster and Tami Ruhl, with the Knox County Health Department, told the Knox County Commissioners Thursday that a playground for children with, and without, disabilities is in the works.

Oster said he often hears from parents of handicapped children who are upset that handicapped play equipment is located separately in its own space at playgrounds.

“They want their kids to be included with the other kids,” Oster said.

The playground, as proposed, includes a large tower/slide area, as well as smaller, individual pieces of equipment. The playground surface will utilize rubber tiles.
