MOUNT VERNON — The city’s Board of Zoning Appeals voted unanimously Wednesday to approve variances to allow construction of a 40-foot by 49-foot house at 901 E. Gambier St.

Board President Chris Menapace noted that the lot was platted in 1881 and at only 52.75 feet wide and 125.5 feet deep, is much smaller than the size called for in modern zoning standards. To meet the setback standards of the modern zoning code would allow a house only 20 feet wide.
