MOUNT VERNON — Author Paul (P.L.) Gaus will be at Paragraphs Bookstore, 229 S. Main St., on Saturday, from 6:30-8 p.m.
Gaus is the author of “Whiskers of the Lion,” his ninth Amish-Country Mystery, published by Plume Books, a Division of Penguin Random House. The stories, published first by Ohio University Press and subsequently by Plume, are set mostly in Holmes County, Ohio, which is home to the world’s largest and most varied settlement of Amish and Mennonite people.
Murder mysteries about Amish people might seem counter-intuitive, but in his Amish-Country Mysteries, P.L. Gaus illuminates Amish culture in stories that are as unique as the Amish themselves. Gaus’ knowledge of the culture of the “Plain People” stems from 40 years of extensive exploration of this pastoral community, which includes several dozen sects of Anabaptists living closely among the so-called “English” or “Yankee” non-Amish people of Holmes County. He lectures widely about the Amish people he has met and about the lifestyles, culture and religion of this remarkable community of religious separatists.
