MOUNT VERNON — All alone on a 4-inch wide wooden balance beam, where a minor mistake of a fraction of an inch can be very costly, Emilie Schworm of Howard had one last chance to shine, and she made it count.

Schworm, who recently graduated from East Knox High School, scored an 8.35 out of a possible 10 points in the balance beam competition at the championship level finals of the YMCA Gymnastics National Championships, which were held in the Savannah International Trade and Convention Center in Savannah, Georgia, on June 29 through July 2. Her score landed her a seventh place finish in the finals.
