MOUNT VERNON — For some area youngsters, it’s the first step on a road that they hope will, one day, take them to the varsity and beyond.

For some of Tuesday’s third- and fourth-graders, and Thursday’s fifth- and sixth-graders, it’s a hands-on introduction to volleyball — a sport that most kids their age have only been able to watch. Area youngsters who attended the Mount Vernon summer volleyball camp, held at the YMCA’s Sports Center this week, received some of their first technical instruction from some of the area’s best coaches.

“Our goal was to provide the younger kids with some exposure to volleyball,” said Mount Vernon Middle School coach Alan Cassell. “We’ve had various clinics we started in March. There’s just not a lot of opportunities at this age level (in volleyball). The YMCA has partnered with us to provide use of this facility and has been really supportive of our efforts.”
