MOUNT VERNON — It was going to take a single extraordinary effort to win Monday’s first 10-under tournament game at Phillips Park.
Hayden Higgins provided it.
Higgins made running the bases in the seventh inning look like child’s play. His heads-up baserunning resulted in the winning run in Mount Vernon Black’s 7-6 victory over Guernsey County 10U.
“This was one of the best games I’ve ever been a part of,” Mount Vernon head coach Corey Firebaugh said. “It was a stressful situation, and they all stepped up to the challenge. They made plays when we needed to make plays. They threw strikes when we needed them. I’m real proud of how they did.”
