MOUNT VERNON — The start of the District 5 12-under Little League tournament has been good for Caden Rowland.

The Mount Vernon All-Star hit his team’s lone home run, added a single and drove in two runs in Game 1 of the tournament against Guernsey County. He also starred on the mound, striking out six batters in 3 2/3 innings in his team’s 11-1 victory on Wednesday at Phillips Park.

Rowland’s home run came in the third inning. His shot went over the wall at straightaway center field to give Mount Vernon an 8-1 victory.

Rowland hit .297 in the regular season for the Orange Sox travel team — about 200 points lower than the team average. But Chris Buttke — who coaches both teams — has Rowland firmly planted in the No. 2 batting slot. He knew Rowland is better than that.
