MOUNT VERNON — Community activities and fireworks are planned throughout the Mount Vernon News area in celebration of Independence Day. The following events are scheduled:

•Fredericktown — Celebration events will be held Tuesday at Fredericktown Community Park. There will be food and game concessions, a co-ed softball tournament, and the gates of Sockman Lake swimming beach will be open at noon for a day of free swimming. The fire department will offer Bingo in the park’s shelter beginning at 1 p.m. Kid’s games will begin at 3 p.m. near the lake area with events planned for children ages 2 to 14. A band, Southbound, will perform at 7:30 p.m. Fireworks will end the day at 10 p.m.

•Mount Vernon — Fireworks will be Tuesday at Ariel-Foundation Park. Concerts and fun begins at 4 p.m. with fireworks being set off at 10 p.m. (dusk). The Central Ohio Brass Band will perform at 4 p.m. and the 7 Bridges (Eagles Tribute Band) will perform at 8 p.m.

•Gambier — The Mayor’s Welcome will begin at 11 a.m. with the Citizen of the Year Award and Poet Laureate given from the train’s flatcar at the depot on the Kokosing Gap Trail on Tuesday. The parade will end in the park. The park will hold the annual picnic full of food, music and a variety of activities.

•Apple Valley — Fireworks will be Saturday at the Apple Valley Club House at dusk.

•Utica — The Utica Fourth of July Celebration will be Tuesday from 5-9 p.m. with fireworks at dusk. Fun at South End Park, 60 Blacksnake Road, Utica, will include bounce houses, glow sticks and hot dogs, chips and bottled water.
