MOUNT VERNON — After 40 years of dedication to helping patients, Dr. Daniel L. Smith is retiring from his career as a general practitioner. On Thursday, Smith’s co-workers, family and friends gathered in the Knox Community Hospital cafeteria to celebrate his career via a retirement party.

Dozens of people gathered to chat, laugh and have a piece of cake.

“It’s been emotional, but yet I think it’s time,” Smith said, regarding his bittersweet decision. “I think I’m going to miss the people and my patients (the most). I will not miss the computer. It’s people that I’m going to miss because people are what it is all about.”
