Virgil Shipley/News There were lots of new sunburns at the Mount Vernon Municipal Swimming pool Friday afternoon. They were among the 1,098 men, women and children who flocked there on the 90-degree day.

MOUNT VERNON — After a slow start Memorial Day weekend, attendance at Hiawatha Water Park jumped along with the heat.

Recreation Director and Assistant Pool Manager Jerry Clinger reported that attendance on June 10, 11 and 12 was more than 4,000, with 1,583 people coming through the gate on Monday, June 12.

“The first two weeks were spotty,” he said, “With temperatures only in the 70s.”

He also reported the first session of swim lessons is winding up, but there are still openings in the next two sessions.
