Geoff Cowles/News Nate Woodford of the Mount Vernon Coed Softball League hits a double during his game for Kehn Kranes in league play on Sunday. Woodford, a former Mount Vernon High School football player, is in his second year in the league.

MOUNT VERNON — In the mid-2000s, Nate Woodford patrolled the football field as a linebacker for the Mount Vernon Yellow Jackets. On the offensive side of the ball, he helped to protect the quarterback as a guard.

The 2008 Mount Vernon High School graduate went on to a career in college football and the concept of patrolling and protecting have become his life.

Woodford, now 26, can be seen spending his summer Sunday afternoons with friends and teammates in the Mount Vernon Coed Softball League at Memorial Park. For him, it’s a way to relax with family and friends.

“Softball and fishing help keep me physically active,” Woodford said. “I never played baseball in high school. In fact, this is only my second year of softball, but I really like it.”
