Geoff Cowles/News Jess Wellman awaits a throw at home plate for the First Federal Savings & Loan team in Mount Vernon Coed Softball League play on Sunday.

MOUNT VERNON — Jess Wellman knew exactly what she wanted and she didn’t waste a bit of time going after it.

Wellman, a 2013 graduate of Mount Vernon High School, took the 18-month program at Bradford School to become a veterinary technician. Now, the former Yellow Jacket superstar and current Apple Valley resident works at Fredericktown Veterinary Clinic.

It is a dream come true for Wellman, who has a special love for animals.

“I’ve grown up around animals,” Wellman said. “I have five dogs. When I was still living at my mom’s, I had turtles, fish and a hermit crab. I also had a love bird that we got when I was three. He passed away last year, so he lived to be pretty old. I like to think that I have a special connection with animals.”

Best of all is that Wellman can go back to her other favorite activity — softball. She is spending her summer weekends playing in the Mount Vernon Coed Softball League, catching and patrolling third base for the First Federal Savings & Loan team.
