MOUNT VERNON — The Mount Vernon Yellow Jackets began the 2017 Central District Track and Field Tournament with field events on Wednesday at Hilliard Darby High School.

Mount Vernon senior Ben Cook punched his ticket to next week’s regionals with a district championship in the shot put. Cook easily outdistanced his competition with a length of 51-feet-11, more than two feet longer than second place. Cook already had a big lead after his second turn went 49-6, but he hit his magical mark in his third and final attempt.
