MOUNT VERNON — The Mount Vernon Middle School marked Arbor Day on Friday in a brief ceremony in which Mayor Richard Mavis issued a proclamation honoring the school and students for their efforts in support of Arbor Day.

Forty-eight students entered a writing contest in which the winners were chosen by the city’s Shade Tree and Beautification Commission, which donated seven trees planted at the school this year.
