CENTERBURG — A “Welcome Home” for those who served active military duty during Vietnam will be part of the Alumni Banquet to be held on May 27 at Centerburg High School. Dinner is at 6 p.m. and the old school may be toured at 4 p.m. Over 115 boys who attended CHS served their country between Aug. 5, 1964 and May 7, 1975.
“All 97 living veterans have been invited to attend as our guests,” said Alumni President John Lambert, ’67.
“I have spoken to a number of these veterans who plan to attend their very first alumni banquet. I think they deserve to be recognized. For the most part, their return home was bittersweet. Of course, they were happy to return safely (as all but two did), but they were not necessarily welcomed with open arms. We still have the chance to show most of them, those still living, we appreciate their service. And it is important to let them know they have not been forgotten. That is the main thing.”
The banquet this year is open to all alumni regardless of the year of graduation. Due to the expected large turnout, it is advised to make your reservation early. Tickets may be purchased by sending $20 to Centerburg Alumni Association, Box 443, Centerburg, OH 43011.
Invited veterans and their guest will attend at no cost. Donations are needed to provide these meals.
“Since a single $500 donation has already been pledged by a fellow alumnus, we only need to raise an additional $750,” Lambert said.
Any member of the public can donate. Donations should be sent to the address listed above and marked “For veterans.” Any overage will be held to permit veterans at future banquets to attend at no cost.
