DANVILLE — Knox County resident William Thatcher hadn’t even given it a thought. It’s just another opportunity to challenge the body and nourish the soul. The fact that he qualified for the Boston Marathon — the pinnacle of distance running — was the last thing on his mind.

“I didn’t know about a qualifying time or anything about it,” Thatcher said. “I ran a marathon in Xenia, about a year ago, and ended up making the time.”

His time of 2 hours, 58 minutes was good enough. Now, Thatcher is preparing to run where athletes around the world dream of running but few ever do. On Monday, in front of thousands, Thatcher will toe the starting line in Boston.
