MOUNT VERNON — Tennis may be a club sport at Mount Vernon Middle School, but don’t dare say it’s “just a club sport.”

The junior high Jackets provide a vital link between the city youth league and the program at the high school. Now in their third season, they help young players get involved and guide them to the next level.

“We get kids from the city program and we try to give them an opportunity to get on the high school team,” said Mount Vernon High School coach Steve Tier. “The main thing about our youth summer program is to let kids know that tennis exists. We try to put it out there as an option for them and if somebody starts thinking that this is a sport they want to focus on, we are giving them a vehicle to help them keep that focus.”
