SPARTA — Centerburg boys basketball coach Andy Cauley has never been very excited about the zone defense.

He feels a team should be able to play a good solid man-to-man defense and only use the zone defense sporadically to throw off the rhythm of the opponent.

After Thursday night, he may be a convert to the zone.

The Trojans used a 3-2 zone to completely shut down Highland’s long-range bombers and rolled to a 44-31 victory in the Mid-Ohio Athletic Conference matchup at Highland.

“We might have become a zone team tonight. The kids played it well. They did a really good job of finding their shooters,” Cauley said. “We didn’t give too many second-chance points. We did a great job of playing together and communicating.”
