Camps coming up
MOUNT VERNON — There are still openings for the 16th annual Cougar Basketball Camp at Mount Vernon Nazarene University. Head coach Scott Flemming will conduct the camp at the P.E. Center on the MVNU campus from Monday to Thursday, July 17. The camp is a day camp that will include sessions for boys ages 8 through 12 (8:30 a.m. to noon) and 13 through 18 (1:30 to 5 p.m.). Many area coaches as well as coach Flemming will hold coaching clinics for the campers. The Cougar coaching staff and current MVNU basketball players such as Jadin Thomas, Brandon Short, Robbie Taylor and Ian Quick will assist with instruction.

GAMBIER — Kenyon College will host the Nike Softball Camp for girls ages 10 through 18 from Sunday, July 20, through Thursday, July 24. Camp options include an overnight camp (girls must by 12 or older); and extended day camp from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. daily; and a day camp from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. There is a fee for each option.

FREDERICKTOWN — Fredericktown High School head coach Luke Beal will hold a youth football camp for grades five through eight on Monday, Wednesday, July 16, and Friday, July 18, from 9 to 11 a.m. at the high school practice field. Registration is Monday from 8 to 9 a.m., and there is a fee.
DANVILLE — Danville will hold a football camp for boys entering third through eighth grades from Monday through Wednesday, July 16, from 9 to 11 a.m. There is no cost for the camp. Baseball team looking for players
COLUMBUS — The Ohio Chargers, an elite 14-Under Major-class travel baseball team, is looking for accomplished and experienced travel baseball players for the 2009 season. The Ohio Chargers recruit from an open geography. The Ohio Chargers will play a regional schedule of Major-class travel teams and will participate in the highest level tournaments throughout the Midwest. MV football teams to hold reunion
MOUNT VERNON — There will be a reunion of Mount Vernon High School’s first undefeated and untied teams of 1956 and 1957 on Friday, July 18, at The Alcove Restaurant. Players, managers and cheerleaders from those teams who were in the graduating classes of 1956 through 1960 are invited. Several coaches have also been invited.
There is no charge, although a donation may be asked for at the door. Memorabilia will be on display, and some game films will be shown throughout the evening.

Babe Ruth taking applications
MOUNT VERNON — The Knox County Babe Ruth Fall Baseball League is accepting applications for the 2008 season. Knox County Women’s Golf Tournament to be held
CENTERBURG — Table Rock Golf Club wil host the 2008 Knox County Women’s Golf Tournament on Friday, July 25, at 9 a.m. The rain date is Aug.22. There is a fee, which includes golf, lunch and prizes. HOWARD — Apple Valley Golf Club will hold a junior golf tournament on Monday, July 28, for any high school golfer who is trying out for or planning to play on his team this fall. CENTERBURG — The Table Rock Junior Clinic will be held from July 28 to 30, from 9 to 11 a.m. The clinic is open to all junior golfers ages 8 through 18. Colt Football holding sign-ups
MOUNT VERNON — The Knox County Colt Football League is taking applications for the 2008 football season. The league is open to boys and girls who live in Knox County and fall between the ages of 6 and 12. Applications have been mailed to returning players and are available at Sport-N-Shoes and Hibbett Sporting Goods.
Sign-ups will take place on Saturday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Knox County Service Center, 117 E. High St. The application must be accompanied by a copy of the player’s birth certificate, as well as a fee to participate. For additional information contact Jeff Osborn at 398-4982.
HOWARD — East Knox Colt Football sign-up day is Saturday, July 19, from 10 a.m. to noon at Kokosing Camp & Canoe.

West M Youth League Baseball Tournament
ZANESVILLE — The West M Schools Youth League Baseball Tournament will take place from July 18 through 20 at West M Schools in Zanesville. There are three levels of competition, 6 to 8 years coach pitch, 9 to 10 years kid pitch and 11 to 12 years. There is a fee, and two baseballs must also be provided. FREDERICKTOWN — Fredericktown sports physicals for both high school and junior high athletes will be held Thursday, June 26, from 1 to 5 p.m., and on August 7, from 1 to 4 p.m. at Dr. Elder’s office.
There is a fee, and athletes must bring physical forms with them. Forms may be picked up at the Fredericktown Central Office, behind the junior high building, Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m.
MV cross country team holding car wash
MOUNT VERNON — The Mount Vernon girls cross country team will hold a fundraising car wash on Sunday from noon to 4 p.m. at Advance Auto Parts, 945 Coshocton Ave. Tim Horton’s will also donate a portion of iced coffee sales that day to the team.
MV football team to begin practice
MOUNT VERNON — The Mount Vernon High School and middle school football teams will begin practicing on July 14.
Prospective players entering grades nine through 12 will report for the opening of camp at 2:45 p.m., while those in grades seven and eight will report at 4:45 p.m.
Players are asked to wear cleats, gym shorts and a T-shirt and be ready to practice.

MOUNT VERNON — The Foundation for Knox Community Hospital will host the ninth Annual Charity Golf Classic on Saturday at Chapel Hill Golf Course. All proceeds from this event will be used to purchase a digital mammography machine for The Center for Cancer Care at Knox Community Hospital. Chairman for this year’s event is Lynn Clapper.

Barros to conduct seminar at Lashley Jiu Jitsu Academy
MOUNT VERNON — Eduardo “Dudu” Barros will conduct a seminar on Saturday at the Lashley Jiu Jitsu Academy from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Barros was born in Brazil, and at the age of 11 began studying Gracie Jiu-Jitsu under Carlson Gracie Sr., quickly becoming a top student. He competed in several regional and national competitions in Brazil and consistently placed first, and was a four-time winner in the Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Nationals. In 1997 Barros relocated to the United States and created the Dudu Barros Jiu Jitsu Academy. He is an alumni of Kent State Uniiversity, where he majored in business administration and earned an MBA from The University of Phoenix. Dudu is a current member of the Nova Uniao Jiu-Jitsu Team and is a Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Black Belt. There is a fee.
