MOUNT VERNON — The roller coaster ride the Mount Vernon boys basketball team was on Tuesday finally became too much to bear.
The Yellow Jackets battled back from several deficits, including a seven-point deficit with two minutes to go in regulation that forced overtime. But, in the end, the big hill got to the Jackets as Franklin Heights was able to escape with a 51-49 overtime victory in Ohio Capital Conference action at The Hive.
Mount Vernon (3-3 overall, 0-2 OCC) trailed by five twice in the first half only to battle back and take the lead. Then, in the second half, the Falcons’ leads grew to eight and seven. But, each time the hill got tougher to climb, the Jackets pulled themselves back up and into the game.
With two minutes left in regulation, Franklin Heights (3-2, 1-1) led 45-36. But, Mount Vernon was able to score the final nine points of the quarter, including a nice putback from Tyler Galbraith with 15 seconds left to send the game into overtime.
