MOUNT VERNON — The Fredericktown Freddies have been in the Bad Apple Brawl — formerly the Wazie Invitational — for years. But they had never had an individual earn first place.
Until Saturday, with the help of a little motivation.
Carson Mills’ top finish in the 120-pound category helped propel the Freddies to an eighth-place team finish at The Hive in Mount Vernon. Meantime, the host Mount Vernon Yellow Jackets earned third place as a team, finishing one point ahead of Toledo St. John’s.
Mills finished second in the 113-pound category at the Wazie last year. His only loss came to perennial Division I state placer Dakota Riley in the final by a single point.
“This really means a lot,” said Mills. “I still need a lot of improvement. It shouldn’t have been that close of a match. But I ended up pulling it out, so that’s a big thing.”
Earlier in the week, Mills was reminded of that fact, in the form of a newspaper clipping from the event.
