DANVILLE — It was a night for the blue and white on Thursday at Danville High School.
The Blue Devils’ volleyball team hosted the Westerville Northside Christian Lions in their OHSAA Division IV sectional opener and both teams wore blue and white.
The similarities ended there.
The scrappy Lions battled, playing a disciplined game, but the Blue Devils swept them, 25-17, 25-15, 25-15, despite coming out a little rough.
“The first half of the first set, we were really, really stiff in our play,” said Danville coach Ann Henry. “After we gained some points and played for a little bit, I could see them relax.”
The Lions took advantage of the Blue Devils’ early jitters and rang up a couple of key points from Sydney Dosier and Abby Brown, trailing by only two at 11-9.
Later, up by 19-14 Monica Honabarger (three kills, five digs, 92 percent serve reception) serving, Danville went on a short scoring spree, featuring a kill by Melissa Mickley (six kills, six digs, three blocks) to take a 23-14 advantage. That was enough to hold off the Lions in Set 1.
