MOUNT VERNON — You always want to win on Senior Night. But sometimes, the ball doesn’t bounce your way. Literally.
The Mount Vernon Yellow Jackets had several chances against Buckeye Valley in their final home game on Thursday. But the ball kept missing by inches and left Mount Vernon on the short end of a 2-1 defeat in girls soccer at Yellow Jacket Stadium.
The chances came quickly and furiously for the Jackets in the closing minutes. Trailing 2-0, Mount Vernon (3-9-2) cut the deficit in half on a shot by Chelsie Hayes that squirted through the Baron goalkeeper’s grip and bounced in the net.
“I had no idea I had that much space,” said Hayes. “I got lucky on that one.”
Hayes had a prime opportunity to tie the match with just 5 seconds left. She caught a rebound off a Buckeye Valley defender and had an open look at the right side of the net, but her shot went too high by inches.
The shot was created after a free kick following a yellow card to one of the Barons’ midfielders.
