MOUNT VERNON — Mount Vernon girls soccer coach Emanuel Kladias is glad the week is over.
His Yellow Jackets fell to Lexington at home, 5-1, on Saturday, ending what he called a “very bad week.”
“This week, even at our practices, we were not working hard. We had the wrong attitude,” said Kladias. “I believe that leads to big losses. We didn’t work hard enough to earn a win. We didn’t deserve to win.”
The score didn’t actually reflect the job done by the Jackets on Saturday. The two teams were nearly even in 50-50 chances and shots for most of the match. As the match wore on, however, the Minutemen controlled the ball more and created more chances.
Allie Gottschling scored three goals for Lexington (4-7-1), with the first coming in the fourth minute on a two-on-one chance. Her second goal came 11 minutes later.
Mount Vernon’s lone goal came when a handball in the box was called against Lexington in the 65th minute. Chelsie Hayes scored easily on the penalty kick.
