UTICA — The Utica Redskins continued what is likely their hardest volleyball schedule ever with a nail biter at home against Licking Heights on Saturday.
The two teams traded close sets until the fifth, when the Hornets squeezed past the Redskins in a 16-25, 26-24, 25-19, 18-25, 16-14 match that could only be described as a classic.
“We let them take it from us,” said Utica head coach Laurie Londot. “We have to get past that. We doubt ourselves, and we back off.”
In a final set that featured solid runs, comebacks and missed opportunities, Licking Heights took a 6-1 lead after three straight aces by Bailey Carr. But the Redskins responded with a 5-0 run featuring two of Kalyn Scott’s three aces and a Shelby Francis block.
The two teams traded off points until Utica took a 14-13 lead on a Mykala Ryan ace. However, following a timeout, the Hornets fought off Utica’s match point, then landed one of their own with another Carr ace.
