SPARTA — Two local teams coming off thrilling high-scoring victories will face off in Friday’s Killbuck Savings Mount Vernon News Game of the Week.
The Mount Vernon Yellow Jackets will make a rare trip to Highland High School to face the Scots in a nonconference Week 2 showdown.
It’s a matchup the Scots have been waiting for.
“We’re excited to be able to play a local team,” said Highland head coach Chad Carpenter. “The environment will be fun to play in. Playing a local team like this allows you to develop another rivalry.”
“When you’re closer to home, community people talk. They want to win, and we want to win,” said Mount Vernon head coach Anthony Naples. “There’s that closeness that brings something special to it.”
Mount Vernon’s 55-42 victory over Marion Harding was far from easy. The Jackets gained 523 total yards but gave up 383, including 301 on the ground. Highland’s 414 yards against East Knox came entirely on the ground.
Those numbers don’t bode well for a Mount Vernon defense that has to rotate its front seven around yet again, after injuries in Week 1 and subsequent practices left them decimated.
