MOUNT VERNON — For one half, the Mount Vernon Yellow Jackets went toe-to-toe with a very talented Mansfield Christian team.
Until the first goal was scored. Then, the bottom fell out.
The Jackets didn’t manage another shot after the Flames scored eight minutes into the second half. Mount Vernon then flamed out in a 3-0 defeat in Thursday’s girls soccer match at Yellow Jacket Stadium.
“It’s one of those games where I hope we learn from our mistakes,” said Mount Vernon head coach Emanuel Kladias.
Through the first 48 minutes, Mount Vernon allowed 16 shots; however, few of those shots came from good looks. Defenders Maddi Depolo, Laura Sahr and Maggie Parshall were excellent in cutting off Mansfield’s forwards, while freshmen Holly Johnson and Emily Russell specialized in knocking the ball away. Six of the Flames’ shots were on target, but goalkeeper Erin Lawhon knocked them away.
