MOUNT VERNON — Last season, the Mount Vernon Yellow Jackets kicked off on the right foot, knocking off Marion Harding, 27-0.
The victory was the start of a 5-1 stretch that saw the Jackets defeat three Ohio Capital Conference foes.
This season is set up for another strong start, if Mount Vernon can get up for Week 1 once again. The Jackets will get their chance on Friday at 7:30 p.m. at Yellow Jacket Stadium.
“Every team in the state of Ohio wants to win the first game,” said Mount Vernon head coach Anthony Naples. “We’re not even going to look at Game 2 until Friday at 11 o’clock. It’s cliche, but it’s the truth.”
Both the Yellow Jackets and the Presidents are heading down similar paths.
Both teams have solid running games based around talented tailbacks. Both have quarterbacks who can tuck the ball away and run when necessary. And both are dealing with a lack of depth at key positions.
