MOUNT VERNON — As they do every year, the Mount Vernon boys and girls cross country teams debuted the 2013 season on their home course.
Although the teams didn’t finish very high, there were good performances among the Jackets at Saturday’s Mount Vernon Kiwanis Invitational.
Senior Stephen Rowe finished seventh overall in the boys race with a time of 16:52.8. It was one spot better than last year, and an improvement from last year’s time by nearly a whole minute.
“I went into the race wanting to pace off of someone else,” said Rowe. “I don’t know my pacing yet, since it’s the start of the season. So I want to establish where I am, then I can work off of that.”
Rowe kept up with the leaders — most of whom were from Dublin Jerome — until the end of the first mile. At that point, Jerome’s runners got away, and it became more of a race between Rowe, Olentangy’s Charles Rodeheffer and Marysville’s Alec Sandusky. Rowe sprinted past both at the final turn.
