MOUNT VERNON — The Mount Vernon Yellow Jackets used Friday’s scrimmage against Westerville North to find out how far they have to go to get ready for football season.
J.D. Orr rushed for two touchdowns in the first half, and Lucas Staten and Nate Davis added scores in the second, but the defense was not able to contain the Warriors in a 33-26 defeat at Yellow Jacket Stadium.
“Our team can do the right things to be successful very quickly,” said Mount Vernon head coach Anthony Naples. “But, we’re trying to come together. We have a lot of young guys playing. They need more experience.”
Mount Vernon fans filled about half of the home bleachers. Their tickets went toward the refurbishing of the stadium and the field. Despite the lack of a large showing, the crowd was loud throughout the game.
Orr’s first touchdown run came early in the second quarter with the Jackets trailing, 7-0. He burst through a hole in the line and broke several tackles in the secondary, finally getting to the endzone.
