MOUNT VERNON — She hasn’t coached a game yet at Mount Vernon High School, but the News has confirmed that Marcie Alberts is out as girls basketball coach.
Alberts was named coach of the Yellow Jackets in late June. She started camps and began to run sessions in the high school gym before her hiring was even announced.
Over the weekend, Alberts informed the school that she had accepted a position as assistant coach at Division I Indiana-Purdue Fort Wayne.
“This was very unexpected,” Alberts told the News. “I had gotten my kids ready to go to school in Mount Vernon. It took me off guard. It’s been a whirlwind ever since.”
A member of the Mount Vernon school board said that Alberts was offered and had accepted a position as intervention specialist, but that she recently informed the board that she was accepting another position.
Mount Vernon High School activities director Mark Shively said the search for a new head coach had already begun, and he would like to see the position filled “as soon as possible.”
