MOUNT VERNON — It’s been a dogfight so far for the No. 1 position on the Mount Vernon Middle School golf team.
The team itself has benefited from the race.
The Yellow Jackets finished third out of nine teams in the 13th Annual MVMS Golf Invitational at Hiawatha Golf Course on Saturday. Mount Vernon’s Connor Curry took home medalist honors with an 83, while teammate Brandon Main finished in third place with an 84.
Curry and Westerville Genoa’s Zach Wengerter tied for the top spot and played sudden death for the right to be called medalist. Both players parred holes 10 and 11, then Curry parred 18 while Wengerter bogeyed.
As the pair began their tiebreaker, most of the teams as well as their coaches and parents gathered around the 10th tee. Then the gallery followed the golfers through the entire playoff, giving it a feel of a professional event.
