MOUNT VERNON — It was not the way the Mount Vernon Yellow Jacket seniors wanted their last home game to go.
While Eric Ashbrook sat out the game with an injury, fellow seniors Seth Badger and Duke Cunningham combined for nearly two-thirds of Mount Vernon’s points on Friday.
But they couldn’t match the pure athleticism of the New Albany Eagles. In their 50-31 victory, New Albany used a 12-0 run to put the game away early and didn’t commit a single turnover until late in the third period.
“We have to get better from this game,” said Mount Vernon head coach Kurt Kaufman. “There’s a number of things we need to get better at. We’ll look at the tape and figure out what we need to work on.”
They’d better do that in a hurry.
The Yellow Jackets’ first tournament game is Wednesday, Feb. 27, and their opponent will likely be the same New Albany Eagles. That is, barring an upset at the hands of Marysville in the sectional semifinals.
But the Eagles, the No. 4 seed in the Central District, won’t likely be caught offguard in their first playoff game. Which means Mount Vernon will have to deal with the undefeated Ohio Capital Conference champs one more time.
