MOUNT VERNON — A high school boys basketball game Wednesday featured an undefeated, but fledgling team from Mount Vernon, going down to defeat at the hands of their long-established crosstown rival, 76-63.
Neither of the teams were the Mount Vernon Yellow Jackets.
In fact, Wednesday evening’s contest wasn’t even an Ohio High School Athletic Association game, and one of the participants was not even a school.
The Knox County Swarm, a club team of high schoolers that plays in the newly-formed YMCA of Mount Vernon High School Boys Basketball League (YMCAMVBBL) suffered their first defeat of the season to the host Mount Vernon Academy Eagles in an interleague matchup that had much of the excitement, look and feel of a OHSAA-sanctioned game.
“Now, we have a crosstown rival that we are competitive with,” said YMCAMVBBL director and Swarm coach Eric Boggs. “To me, that’s fantastic. That gives them something to look forward to and it gives us something to look forward to.”
The league is currently comprised of five teams from Knox and Morrow counties and plays a regular season of approximately 15 games, which coincides with the high school basketball season.
