MOUNT VERNON — For the third straight year, Centerburg’s Tristen Simpson was dominant enough to be named Mount Vernon News All-Area Volleyball Player of the Year.
The senior led the Trojans once again in kills, this time with 324. Her totals include 42 blocks and 39 aces. She was also near the top of the team in assists and passing percentage.
For her four-year career, Simpson accumulated 1,164 kills. She was Most Valuable Player at the District 11 All-Star Match and later participated in the Ohio All-Star Match. Simpson was also named Second Team All-Ohio as well as Mid-Buckeye Conference Player of the Year.
Simpson will move on to play for Northern Kentucky next year.
Teammate Kendall Compton was named to the All-Area First Team as the assists leader for the undefeated MBC champions. Danville’s Megan Bice was one of the best defenders in the area, averaging over 10 digs per match. Mount Vernon’s Melissa Hall led a rejuvenated Yellow Jacket squad at the net. Utica’s Rachel Londot was the Redskin leader in kills. Kam Terry stepped up as the on-court leader for the Highland Scots. And Lydia Webster was the dominant offensive and defensive force for the Fredericktown Freddies.
All-Area Honorable Mention honors went to Centerburg’s Courtney Canter, Stacy Fielding and Mikaela Weldy; Danville’s Monica Honabarger and Melissa Mickley; East Knox’s Meghan Brady and Danielle Totten; Fredericktown’s Emily Williams; Highland’s Brogin Denman and Macy Winklefoos; Mount Vernon’s Katelyn Dufur and Parker VanFossen; and Utica’s Kelly Overton and Alex Preston.
For instilling a new teamwork attitude in his team and taking it to its first district tournament appearance in years, Mount Vernon’s Alan Cassell is our All-Area Volleyball Coach of the Year.
