DANVILLE — On a rainy, muddy night in Danville, the normally high-powered Blue Devils turned to their mudders.
The Devils followed the lead of their offensive line, racking up 389 yards rushing and rolled to a 42-6 victory over Utica. The win locked up a share of the Mid-Buckeye Conference title for the Blue Devils.
“We thought our offensive line did a terrific job controlling the line of scrimmage,” said Danville coach Ed Honabarger. “Whether we ran the sweeps or traps inside, we did a very good job. Our kids ran the ball hard.”
The Devils had been flying past people with their high-powered spread offense, but turned to the running game to beat the Redskins. Nick Hawk, Kyle Boston, Andy Payne, Josh Bratton, Jamarcus Hershberger and Daniel Alden blew open big holes for the Devils’ running game, which had three players near the 100-yard mark.
“We were able to pound the ball. It was rainy, so we ran it a lot and had a lot of success,” said quarterback Bryce Staats, who rushed for 117 yards on the night. “The line was doing a real good job tonight. We just tried to run the ball hard and make plays.”
Staats broke the 1,000-yard mark rushing with his last carry of the night, a 15-yarder midway through the third quarter.
