MOUNT VERNON — The familiar colors of orange and black were displaced by black and gold at Mount Vernon Middle School Friday afternoon, when the Columbus Crew soccer team took over the gymnasium.
Students were treated to a chance to meet representatives of the playoff-bound Crew, who led by former player and current “brand ambassador” for the Crew, Frankie Hejduk. The Crew whipped the packed gymnasium into a frenzy with cheering, music, autographs and a teacher-student goal-kicking challenge.
Crew Take Over Your School is an idea that was created in cooperation with the Ohio Education Association and the Columbus Crew. Mount Vernon Middle School is the first school to have been chosen by the Crew after selling the most game tickets for a group of fans from a single school.
“They won something special so we wanted to show them our love for coming out to the games,” said Hejduk. “We wanted to show our appreciation as much as we could. If we can get the kids pumped up and excited about their own school, about their own team spirit, tying it in with the Crew and pumping the game of soccer up as well, then I am all for it. You can tell that all the students all got a blast. It was high-energy, high-octane and, hopefully, they left here saying, ‘What the heck just happened?’”
