JOHNSTOWN — In a match-up of completely different styles, sheer power won out over speed and finesse Friday.
Johnstown dominated the line of scrimmage with its big, physical team, steamrolling Centerburg in the second half to post a 42-21 victory in the Mid-Buckeye Conference opener for both teams at Johnstown.
“This was a very good win over a very good football team,” said Johnstown coach Mike Carter. “They have a very explosive offense and we have a lot of respect for them. We were able to control the line of scrimmage and run the ball and the clock tonight. The last thing we want to do is leave them time on the clock.”
The Trojans (2-2 overall, 0-1 MBC) showed why Carter was worried early, scoring just two minutes into the game. They were the benefactor of a Johnstown turnover on a punt, which gave the Trojans the ball at the Johnnies’ 23-yard line. Jeremy Sesma got the Trojans on the board first with a 5-yard run.
But, that lead was short-lived as the Johnnies (3-1, 1-0) exerted their might on the next drive. They used 11 running plays to march 70 yards for the score. Quarterback Tyler Thompson put the finishing touches on the drive with an 11-yard scamper for the score.
